Cheers to Winter at Heatherton in Roswell
By LauraE | December 30, 2008
Braving brisk winds and falling temperatures, residents of Heatherton in Roswell raised their cups of hot chocolate in a toast to winter at exactly 12:37 p.m. on December 21, 2008. That was the exact moment of high noon of the Winter Solstice and the time when the longest shadow of the year hit the Solstice Stone in Heatherton’s formal maze — which also happens to be a place to go for a walk, a gathering place for residents, an ancient-style GPS, and a sun dial.
Harold Cunliffe, who works with Heatherton developer The Pacific Group, created the large astronomical instrument. He was on hand to enjoy the moment with residents and explain the maze’s design.
Residents agree that the Heatherton maze isn’t the only thing that makes the community remarkable. The design, quality and service provided by Monte Hewett Homes make it a stand-out, too. And no other North Fulton communities enjoy direct access to GA 400, which saves residents time and frustration with every commute. With the introduction of a new group of townhomes priced from the low $300,000s, residents are eager to invite more new neighbors to join the fun.

——————————————————————————–
“The Heatherton Folly” in Roswell, a park within Monte Hewett Homes’ Heatherton community in Roswell, uses shadows and stone markers to track time and the passage of seasons. Located near GA 400 and Holcomb Bridge Road, the Heatherton Folly is a maze consisting of two partially overlapping labyrinths. The smaller labyrinth ends at the Solstice Spire, whose shadow marks the winter and summer seasons. In addition to casting its longest shadow of the year, the spire will strike one of two black rocks just outside the maze with its shadow. The only other day of the year when the shadow hits these one of these rocks is at the Summer Solstice, the shortest night of the year and the time the spire casts its shortest shadow.
The second labyrinth ends at the larger Equinox Spire, whose shadow acts as a sundial and marks the Equinoxes. Developed by Harold Cunliffe of the Pacific Group, this civil engineering feat also marks Heatherton’s position on the earth, 84 degrees longitude and 34 degrees latitude, by the angular measurement between the stones that circle the two labyrinths. The maze element was designed by Joe Cunliffe, now 19 but then 14 years old, on a day off from school.
Directions: GA 400 North to exit 7, Holcomb Bridge Road. Go west and take a left onto Dogwood Road. Community is located at the top of the hill on the left.

Looking for good news in today’s economy? Prices for construction materials are the lowest they’ve been in many years. Homeowners who aren’t ready to move can build equity in their homes by finishing basements or completing other projects they postponed at purchase, and they can do it at a significant value. Monte Hewett Homes is available to help, with basement finishing and other renovation services that include all aspects of design and construction.
Hewett says buyers often desire the wine cellars, “man caves,” home offices and elaborate downstairs suites they see in model homes, but can’t always afford those options when purchasing their new homes. Read the rest of this entry »

Holiday Decorating - Safety Tips for Homeowners
By DinaG | December 9, 2008
With all the lights, Christmas trees, candles and snowmen erected in our homes this holiday season, it is important to remember some key tips to keep you home safe. We’ve gathered a few tips for a few “areas” of home holiday decor. Post a comment if you have any other tips to share!
Indoor/Outdoor Lights:
- Don’t leave lights on while you’re sleeping or away from home. If you tend to forget, use a timer.
- Don’t plug more than three light strings into an extension cord.
- Don’t use metal staples or nails as fasteners for lights. This can damage the protective insulation covering the wires.
- Don’t run extension cords across sidewalks or driveways.
- Do make sure the lights and extension cords you use outside are certified for outdoor use and are plugged into a ground fault circuit interrupter outlet.
- Do keep decorations and ladders away from overhead electrical lights and power lines.
- Do follow the manufacturer’s guidelines on how many strings of lights can be safely connected together.
Trees
- If you plan to buy an artificial tree, make sure that it is clearly labelled “fire retardent.”
- To make sure a fresh tree stays less of a fire hazard, choose one that has needles that are hard to pull off the branches and that the trunk is sticky with resin.
- Place trees away from fireplaces, radiators and other heat sources.
- Do not block doorways, and place the tree out of the way of household “traffic.”
Candles
- Never use lighted candles on or near the tree or ANY other evergreens.

- Only place candles where they cannot be knocked down or blown over.
- Consider using battery-operated flameless candles (these are neat - some even have timers!) which can look, smell, and feel like real candles.
- Use sturdy, safe candleholders.
- Protect candle flames with glass chimneys or containers.
