The race takes place on the Silver Comet trail, Atlanta’s hottest running trail…and if you are wondering why is it so popular ... it's because it’s FLAT!

Winter is on the way!
Tips on what to do NOW to prepare your home

Cold weather is heading our way, and if you haven’t prepared your home, you could be spending a lot more this winter than necessary.  Here are a couple of quick tips to get you started on winter maintenance:

  • Furnace.  Run it now.  Besides clearing all the dust out of the system (that’s the burning smell you might first experience), you can ensure the unit is functioning properly. Don’t wait until it is cold to call a tech to service your unit.
  • Filters.  While you can get by with changing filters less frequently, we recommend changing furnace filters monthly during the wintertime. No need to buy the most expensive filters, go cheaper and change more frequently. Remember a BLACK (clogged) filter is bad for your furnace, your home, and your lungs.
  • Fireplace.  If you turn off the pilot, be sure to start it again. Keep a close eye on it the first 2 days to ensure it is working.  If you have a wood burning fireplace, check the chimney. Lots of animals like to call the chimney home during the summer.
  • Windows.  This is where you lose the most heat from your home. You can buy easy do-it-yourself kits to replace old moldings, caulk, or foam.  Also, consider sealing unused windows and doors during the winter months to avoid drafts and cold air entering your home.
  • Say Bye, Bye to the Summer Tools. Now is the time to begin packing up outdoor/summer tools and equipment. With the recent rains and cooler weather, you can potentially shut-off your irrigation systems now. (Lawns only need 1" of water a week - and we all know we've gotten MORE than that!) Remember to fully drain the lines. Old water in the system can cause freezing and breakage of the underground pipes.

These are just a couple of quick tips for winterizing your home.  Be sure to check you homeowners warranty  for more information specific to your home.

Also, keep an eye out on our Monte Hewett Blog.  We have lots of information about upcoming events like Halloween, Thanksgiving and New Years.  Happy Living from all of us at Monte Hewett Homes.

Have a safe and fun Halloween

Don't we all become little kids around Halloween?  While we understand that not everyone celebrates this holiday, we thought we would take a moment to enjoy the lighter side of life.  Here are a few "tips and tricks" for a safe and fun Halloween.

Decorating your home?:

  • Make it safe - remember that many trick-and-treaters will visit you at night, so be sure to remove any cables or cords from your walkways or front steps that might cause them to trip.

  • Light it up - not everyone in the neighborhood will be home or celebrating the holiday.  If you want lots of visitors to your front door, be sure to "light it up."  This gives adults and children reassurance the your home is safe for a visit.

  • Keep flames away - while candles, jack-o-lanters, matches and lighters are all part of decorating, be sure to use common sense when putting these items out.  Also - open flames on your front porch could catch a stray Harry Potter cape or Cinderella's dress, so keep burning candles away from your front door and trick or treaters.

  • Here kitty, kitty - pets scare too.  If your pets don't enjoy visitors, they will become especially agitated at multiple visit from ghosts and goblins.  Give them a special treat that night, and maybe tuck them away in a spare bedroom until the festivities are over.

  • Where did I put that power strip? - over the years outdoor decorations have become more and more visible.  But remember to always ensure your outdoor lights are ULC certified, check for broken lights or damaged cords, and never overload extension cords or use power strips outside.

  • Shhhhhhhhhhh, don't wake the neighbors - remember that not everyone celebrates the same holidays.  During your trick or treating this season; have fun, but remember to respect your neighbors.

Other Halloween Quick Tips

  1. Candy - Kids will be less likely to eat candy when out trick-or-treating if they had a big meal before leaving the house.  Try making goolish pizza or other foods to get them in the spirit.

  2. Costumes - Costumes should fit.  Poorly fitted costumes can cause kids to trip, limit their ability to see cars and others, and possibly injure your child.

  3. Carving - Carving pumpkins is a great part of the holiday, but encourage younger children to draw or paint faces on the pumpkin and save the knives for later.

Precautions: As always, we simply provide these tips as things that have worked for our homeowners and customer service managers.  Monte Hewett Homes makes no claims or warranties on these tips and tricks.  Common sense should dictate in most instances.
